Purpose of the Role

At MBHS, the Biomedical Scientist plays a crucial role in collaborating with the medical and nursing teams to deliver a safe, efficient, and high-quality laboratory service that supports timely patient diagnosis.

The Biomedical Scientist performs duties consistently and ethically, adhering to international standards and evidence-based diagnostic practices. They provide accurate information for patient diagnosis and treatment through comprehensive laboratory analysis, including Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Serology, Immunology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Parasitology, and other Pathological studies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate tissue and body fluid samples to diagnose diseases and monitor patient treatment.
  • Report any adverse events affecting patients under your care to the clinic/hospital manager.
  • Maintain required cold chain regulations.
  • Monitor expiry dates on all reagents and chemicals.
  • Manage stock levels to ensure adequate supply, maintaining minimum/maximum levels.
  • Ensure adherence to the Infection Control Policy at all times.
  • Compile monthly reports on laboratory test statistics for management.
  • Conduct proficiency testing and submit results in a timely manner to external quality assurance laboratories.
  • Provide technical advice on test selection, laboratory service utilization, and interpretation of laboratory data.
  • Implement changes resulting from corrective action investigations.
  • Identify and manage nonconformities within the laboratory section.
  • Lead inter and intra laboratory quality assurance tests and programs on site.
  • Ensure compliance with end-of-cycle External Quality Assessments (EQAs).
  • Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure the laboratory complies with MBCC Standards and HPCZ guidelines for good laboratory practice.
  • Review and update laboratory turnaround times.
  • Maintain up-to-date and properly filed records of Proficiency testing, maintenance, calibration/daily controls, and SOP files.
  • Accurately perform patient billing based on laboratory tests.
  • Familiarize with all relevant MBCC policies and procedures pertaining to the laboratory.

Experience and Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences.
  • Current registration and practice license with the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ).
  • 2 – 3 years of work experience in a similar role within a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in computer literacy.
